Dear Wagner Families,

I hope that you are well and finding ways to enjoy the summer.  We recognize that there are complex decisions to be made for your family at this time about the upcoming school year. As a Wagner Community, we will support you in the year ahead. Please know whatever decision your family is making right now is the right decision.

As we reach the midpoint of the summer, I want to provide some important updates on our plans for the 2020-2021 school year.  You are invited to attend our Reopening Information Session for Wagner Families this Wednesday, August 5th at 6pm. We hope this letter and information session will equip you with the information needed to make the best decision for your family.

Throughout the summer I have been meeting with Wagner’s Reopening Advisory Committee, which consists of staff and parent members of our School Leadership Team and School Safety Committee. We have been working in Health, Safety and Instruction subcommittees to support our reopening planning.  We have reviewed our building capacity, size of our classrooms, total number of students and teachers who can be in one classroom at a time, estimated enrollment numbers, and social distancing guidelines to determine which of the scheduling models shared by the Department of Education makes the most sense for our community.  Please know that the safety and health of our students and staff are our number one priority.

After careful consideration and consultation with the Reopening  Advisory Committee, Wagner has chosen Model 3B, one of the approved NYCDOE models. Students participating in Blended Learning will be divided into 3 cohorts (A, B, C). Students who are fully remote will be in Cohort D. The days of the week your child attends school will rotate. Model 3B allows additional health and safety considerations by having each cohort in building two consecutive days to provide ample time for cleaning and sanitizing.  Additionally, we feel Model 3B allows the smoothest transition between blended learning and all-remote learning as needed throughout the school year.

For every 30 school days (approximately 6 weeks), students will be in person for approximately 10 days and learning remotely for 20 days. A sample calendar showing the cohort rotation appears at the end of this letter. We will assign Wagner siblings to the same cohort so that they will attend school on the same days.

In the school building, students will be in a small cohort of up to 12 students, with desks spaced apart in order to ensure proper social distancing. In order to prioritize safety and limit movement within the school building, students will remain in one classroom for the duration of the school day; bagged lunches will be delivered to the classrooms or students may bring a lunch from home to eat in the classroom. All students, staff, and visitors will be required to wear masks at all times.

Families who wish to do so can opt-in to all-remote learning by submitting the NYCDOE’s Learning Preference Survey by August 7th. Students whose families do not submit the form will automatically be enrolled in blended learning and will be assigned to Cohort A, B, or C.  Families who choose all-remote learning will have the option to change back to Blended Learning  during quarterly opt-in windows determined by the NYCDOE. Students who are enrolled in all-remote learning will remain part of the Wagner community.

We recognize that the decision between blended and remote learning for your child is an important one, and you likely have questions. We invite you to our Wagner Reopening Information Session this Wednesday, August 5th at 6pm via Zoom. Please register for the Information Session here (after registering you will receive the link to our Zoom session). Please submit questions in advance by using the “Questions and Comments” space on the registration form. We will answer as many questions as possible during the Reopening Information Session. Please understand that guidance from the NYCDOE and New York State is evolving, and we may not be able to answer all of your questions at this time.

Additionally, if you have not already done so, please take a few minutes to respond to the recent Wagner  family survey included in our last family letter.  We are committed to ensuring that Wagner Middle School is a welcoming and inclusive community for all of our students, families and staff.  This summer we are examining our schools’ practices and policies to make sure they are aligned with this commitment. Your feedback is crucial to this process.

Sincerely,

Jen

Sample Cohort Calendar - Model 3B

The following cohort calendar illustrates how Model 3B would look in a sample month. Since the NYCDOE calendar has not been finalized for the 2020-2021 school year, this calendar does not represent any actual month, but is meant to show how in-person and remote days rotate across weeks. Once the NYCDOE calendar has been published, we will share a Cohort Calendar reflecting the actual dates for the school year 2020-2021.

For Model 3B, students participating in Blended Learning are divided into 3 cohorts (A, B, C). Students who are fully remote are in Cohort D.  When schools are open, the calendar would look like this:
