Dear Families,

ARISTA has been an important opportunity for our students for many years,  I know how hard they work in anticipation of achieving this honor and recognition.  I am excited to inform you that Wagner Middle School will move forward with a virtual ceremony to induct students into ARISTA.

In this unprecedented time, it was necessary to re-think the application and selection process for this honor.   This letter will outline the adjusted criteria and application process for selection into ARISTA for the 2019-2020 school year.

Academic Requirements:

The criteria for ARISTA’s academic requirements are as follows:  “Students must have a cumulative report card average of 90.0% or above for the first two trimesters.”  The cumulative average consists of all core subjects, Math, Science, Social Studies, and ELA.  This is not the same as the overall average calculated on a student’s report card.

To determine academic eligibility, students can check PupilPath for their MP1 and MP2 grades in their core subjects.  Report cards with grades listed by subject are also available in a student's MySchools account.  MP3 grades will not be factored into cumulative averages.

Service Requirements:

The service criteria is reflected by grade level in the table below:

Grade

Total Hours

Minimum Number of School + Community Service Hours

6th

10 hours

3 hours each

7th

20 hours

5 hours each

8th

30 hours

5 hours each

School service is any service done in the school building that does not occur during instructional time. Students can help a staff member before school, during lunch, or after school.

Community service is service done outside of the school building. It must be unpaid, and should be completed through a non-profit organization. If it is not completed through a non-profit organization, the service completed must clearly provide assistance or benefits to underserved members of the community.

We recognize that the disruption to the regular school year may have caused some students not to be able to complete the required number of service hours.  Therefore, students will be asked to demonstrate progress towards meeting the requisite minimum hours in each category and briefly describe any completed or planned service opportunities.  Students may still be inducted to ARISTA even if the minimum number of service hours have not been met.

Character Requirements:

Students must exhibit proper school behavior. Any student who receives a student removal to the SAVE room at any time or who has not consistently followed school and classroom rules and whose parents have been contacted about these concerns is ineligible for ARISTA.

Application Process and Deadlines:

Students will need to complete a digital application form indicating their interest in applying and verifying their eligibility based on the above criteria.  An application via Google Form will be posted in the Grade Level Homeroom Google Classes on Monday June 1st and will be due by Monday June 8th.  Students are asked to complete the application individually and in a timely manner.  Late applications will not be accepted.

We appreciate your flexibility and patience as we worked towards adapting this process and look forward to celebrating the hard work and achievement of our Wagner students.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kelli Buck at   kbuck@schools.nyc.gov.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Rehn Losquadro

Principal
