Refinements to Google Classroom

May 8, 2020

Dear Families,

It has been about two months since our unexpected transition from in-person teaching and learning to our current remote model.  During this time, I have seen resilience in our students and families, who have adapted and continue to engage in learning despite the disruption in the usual routine.  I have seen persistence in our staff who have learned new strategies, technology platforms, and experimented with new ways to support the diversity of learners in our communities.  We have all learned a lot in the past two months about what we are capable of as learners, educators, and as a community of support.

I wanted to take a moment to clarify and share some updates to Wagner’s expectations for remote learning as we look towards the end of the year.

Streamlining grade level Google Classroom pages:

Core subject areas will have one daily post on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Other classes are posting three times per week plus Wellness Wednesdays. Daily posts include and make visible:

  • All necessary materials to complete the day’s activities

                     ○      This may include:
                                    ■          pre-recorded videos
                                    ■          digital Notebook entries/note-taking templates
                                    ■          Google Slideshow/Docs outlining instruction
                      ○          Information about teacher office hours for immediate support

                      ○          Information about any Real-Time opportunities that may be available

Increasing awareness of real-time opportunities:

  • Any Real-Time opportunities will be identified on grade level content Google Classroom pages
  • Grade Level Community Building Activities will be posted on the grade level homeroom Google Classroom pages
  • Students should check their Wagner Email daily for invitations from individual teachers to class-specific or small group real-time opportunities.

Leveraging teacher office hours for direct support:

  • Teacher office hours are posted and students can expect an immediate response during these posted times.  Students can email any teacher during their office hours; they are not limited to their own teacher.
  • Emails from students received to individual teachers outside of their posted office hours may not receive an immediate response.
  • Please be mindful that our expectation of a 48-hour response time to families is still in effect during remote learning.

Utilizing a daily “To-Do” list:

When your child signs in to Google Classroom, there is an option on the upper left corner that says “To-Do”.  This will provide students with a daily list of assignments to be completed for all classes.  Once a student has completed the assignment and clicked “Mark as Done” they will be moved to the “Done” list.  This is one way to create a daily schedule for students.

We hope that this information will be helpful as we continue to make improvements to our online learning platform.  Wishing you and your family a Happy Mother’s Day weekend.

Sincerely,

Jen
