May 6, 2020

Dear Seventh Grade Families,

I hope that you and your loved ones are well. I miss your children and look forward to seeing them once again in the classrooms and hallways of Wagner Middle School.

I am excited to announce that students in the class of 2021 (current 7th graders) have the opportunity to apply for two accelerated courses for 8th grade: Earth Science (Science) and US History Regents (Social Studies). If your child is interested in this opportunity, please carefully review with them the information below and make note of the May 29, 2020 application deadline.

Earth Science

The Earth Science course will cover the content associated with Earth Science (typically offered in 9th grade) and prepare students to take the Earth Science Regents exam in June of 8th grade.

This course is a good fit for students who would like to delve deeper into science content than they have before. Earth Science covers Astronomy, Geology, Hydrology, Oceanography, Meteorology, Climatology and Environmental Science. In this course, students will work hard to think critically, analyze concepts, and connect all of the different physical sciences together. This course will require intensive reading and writing. The class will be working at a faster pace than other 8th grade science classes and will require them to complete more work at home independently. In order to take the Earth Science Regents exam in June, students must have completed required lab hours; lab hours are scheduled into students’ weekly Earth Science class schedule. Please be aware that the final report card grade and Regents exam score for Earth Science will appear on students’ academic transcript used for college admissions.

Selection for Earth Science is based on the following:

Criteria

Weight

7th grade Science grades for first and second trimesters

40%

Score on Cells and Microscope Summative Assessment (January)

30%

Rubric scores on 7th grade ELA Performance Assessments (September 2019 and January 2020)

30%

US History Regents

The US History Regents course will cover the content associated with US History (typically offered in 11th grade) and prepare students to take the new US History Regents (Framework) exam in June of 8th grade. This course is a good fit for students that like to think critically and are familiar with historical thinking skills. This course will require intensive reading and writing; students will be expected to read and analyze primary source documents, as well as read secondary sources to build background information. The course will be working at a faster pace than other 8th grade social studies classes and will require students to complete more work at home independently. Please be aware that the final report card grade and Regents exam score for US History Regents will appear on students’ academic transcript used for college admissions.

Selection for US History Regents is based on the following:

Criteria

Weight

7th grade Social Studies grades for first and second trimesters

40%

Score on 7th grade Social Studies Performance Assessment #2 (January 2020)

30%

Rubric scores on 7th grade ELA Performance Assessments (September 2019 and January 2020)

30%

Application Process

Students who wish to be considered for Earth Science must complete the 2020-2021 Earth Science Application, which will be posted on the G7 Science Google Classroom page on May 7th. The application deadline is 3pm on May 29, 2020.

Students who wish to be considered for US History Regents must complete the 2020-2021 US History Regents Application, which will be posted on the G7 Social Studies Google Classroom page on May 7th. The application deadline is 3pm on May 29, 2020.

Please note that students who do not submit the application for Earth Science or US History Regents by  3pm on May 29th will not be considered for that course. This is a firm deadline. After submitting the application(s), your child will receive an email confirming the submission. It is recommended that your child saves or prints this email for your records.

If your child submits an application for one or both of these classes, they will be notified via their Wagner email account that they have been either selected or waitlisted by June 26, 2020. If your child applies to both US History Regents and Earth Science, and is found to be eligible for both, your family will

choose which class to take in 8th grade; due to the demands of these courses and programming constraints, it is not possible for students to take both US History Regents and Earth Science in 8th grade.

If your child has questions about the application or the selection criteria, they should reach out to their Science and/or Social Studies teacher. If you have additional questions about the process, or if your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let me know.

Algebra I

Students currently enrolled in 7th grade Honors Math will continue on to Algebra I (formerly 8th grade Honors Math) in 8th grade. Currently our 7th grade Honors Math classes are full. Should seats become available in Algebra I, students who at are interested AND have a 90+ average from MP1 and MP2 will have the opportunity to sit for a placement test in September. If your child meets these criteria and would like to be considered for the placement test, please email Ms. Stefanick, Assistant Principal of Mathematics at lstefan@schools.nyc.gov and include your child’s full name, current class, and “Algebra I interest”in the subject line. She will confirm receipt of your email, and will contact you and your child in September if the placement test is administered.

The above outlines our expected accelerated course offerings for 8th graders for the 2020-2021 school year. If changes are required by budgetary considerations or other unforeseen circumstances, we will update families.

Sincerely,

Lindsay Oakes

7th Grade Assistant Principal
