September 18, 2019

Dear Families,

As educators, we support students participating in civic engagement and exercising their First Amendment rights.  Families may choose to have their children participate in the New York City Climate Strike.  On September 20, 2019, our regular classroom schedules will continue as usual. Our ultimate goal is to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment for all students each and every day.

As per the Mayor's directive and guidance from the Chancellor, students may be absent on September 20, 2019, and this absence will be recorded as an excused absence with written parent/legal guardian permission.

In order to ensure students’ safety, if you are planning on having your child leave midday to participate in the climate strike, come to Wagner Middle School and pick them up and sign them out.  Please send them with a note indicating the time you will be picking them up so teachers can send them to the main office.  In a school with over 1,380 students, we want to make sure that the day is organized appropriately.  If you are allowing your child to be signed out by another family, please make sure the individual is listed as a “Contact” on their blue card –  mybluecard.org.

We cannot stop students from exiting the building even if their parent has not granted permission for them to leave.  Please note that this policy is a New York City Department of Education Policy that pertains to September 20, 2019 only.  All other days, your child may NOT leave the building unless they are signed out by a Parent/Guardian or an adult noted on their Blue Card. Additionally, excused absences are still absences in the system and will be reflected in the system as well as on high school applications.  Please note that school staff cannot actively participate in the strike and will not supervise protests outside of the school building.

Thank you for your collaborative efforts with our school community to ensure student safety on this day.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Rehn Losquadro

Principal
